FTV 0229 Gays in the Military "From the Vault" is presented weekly by the Pacifica Radio Archives.
|
| Guests: 1993 Military Veteran's event against the ban of Gays in the Military |
|
In 2010, Americans are still debating the proper place of gays and lesbians in our society. Can we or should we be able to marry? Raise kids...? Lead religious congregations...? Will we ever be free of hate crimes...? Can we serve in the Military?
President Bill Clinton's landmark Don't Ask Don't Tell policy he signed into law on December 21, 1993 is back in the news in 2010 as Americans pressure congress to repeal this law and allow Gays and Lesbians to serve openly in the military.
On this edition of From the Vault we present an open forum on the topic recorded in Los Angeles on April 10th, 1993. Veteran's deliver heart wrenching testimonials about their dedicated service and unceremonious discharged.
Later in the show we will play a newswrap segment on the topic from Pacifica's long running gay and Lesbian newsmagazine This Way Out.
Historian John O'Brian from the Los Angeles Gay Archives, now the One Foundation, traces the role of gays in the military throughout history.
Host Eddie Goggans, 4 year as a Navy Seaman, a fighter jet mechanic on the U.S.S. Saratoga.
Eddie Goggans explains what it was like being gay during his 4 years in military service (5:27)

Robin Podolski, not Veteran. (4:39)
John O' Brian – Los Angeles Gay Archives (25 min)

|
| Guest: Studs Terkel |
|
STUDS TERKEL 1912-2008
Stud Terkel, a great American has passed. In Stud’s memory, therefore, and culled from the vault of the Pacifica Radio Archives we present a compilation of Studs Terkel’s work. Told in the first person by Studs himself, his narrative takes us from the birth of the recording industry through the great depression; from the rise of unions, through two world wars, Korea, and the McCarthy era; from the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement, through the war in Vietnam.
As a tribute to Studs Terkel whose life was dedicated to chronicling American history in the moments of its creation and who recounted it with great insight, wit and humor, the Pacifica Radio Archives is proud to present Studs Terkel: The Spoken Century.
We will miss him.
From the Vault is presented as part of the Pacifica Radio Archives Preservation and Access Project. |
